Strategy and Speed Trumped by Contact - Merchant Services Racing in Top 5 at Mobil 1 Grand Prix of Mosport

Merchant Services Racing was holding all the winning cards at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (formerly Mosport Int'l) during the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron, the Mobil 1 Grand Prix of Mosport. Canadian driver, Kyle Marcelli, along with teammate Matt Downs had the No. 8 Merchant Services Racing / Lamex / Butterfield Farms Oreca LMPC in perfect position for a win. With 20 minutes remaining in the race, contact on the back straight took the team out of contention.

"We really had things going our way," said Brian Alder, team principal. "The crew did an outstanding job all weekend, the car was working really well and we employed a strategy that really capitalized on the Series' new driver required time rule."

The penalty for not having a driver do the required 1 hour drive time was changed at this event. At previous races if the driver did not do the minimum drive time they would not be awarded points. For this race and the remaining races the penalty is much more severe in that if any driver does not do the minimum one hour drive time, no one in the car will get points and the car will be disqualified.  Given that the cars can not go a full hour on fuel under green flag conditions, the door is open for a creative race strategy.
